Santosh Ramchandra Bharaskar Killed in Walkeshwar Balcony Collapse

A 51-year-old man was killed late Tuesday night after a portion of a balcony collapsed at a building in Walkeshwar, South Mumbai, amid heavy rains and strong winds. The incident occurred as intense monsoon showers continued to batter the city, causing widespread disruptions.

The tragedy took place at around 11:22 p.m. on June 30 at the Surya Prakash Building, located on Babulnath Road in Walkeshwar. According to officials from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, a section of the third-floor balcony of the ground-plus-three-storey building suddenly gave way, triggering panic among the residents. The structure is a Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) cessed building.

Emergency response teams were immediately deployed to the scene. The rescue and relief operations involved the Mumbai Fire Brigade, local police, BEST staff, and ward officials. A 108 ambulance was also dispatched to assist at the site.

The victim, identified as Santosh Ramchandra Bharaskar, 51, was retrieved from the debris. He was rushed to JJ Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.

The fatal collapse occurred during a period of heavy overnight rainfall that intensified across Mumbai. The current spell of monsoon showers resumed on Monday after a brief break and has gained strength over the past two days. Several areas in South Mumbai, including Parel, Dadar, Sion, Byculla, Colaba, and Marine Lines, witnessed steady overnight rainfall. Meanwhile, western and eastern suburbs such as Andheri, Kurla, Bandra-Kurla Complex, and Mulund reported moderate showers and waterlogging in low-lying pockets.

In response to the severe weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Alert for Mumbai and the Konkan region. The department has warned of intense rain spells over the coming hours and forecasted heavy rainfall activity to persist over the next four days.

Following the fatal incident, authorities have urged citizens to exercise extreme caution. Residents have been advised to avoid venturing near weak structures, trees, and waterlogged areas unless absolutely necessary.
