Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule Meet PM Modi in Delhi Sparking Political Speculation

Nationalist Congress Party (SP) chief Sharad Pawar and Member of Parliament Supriya Sule met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi last Wednesday, officially to discuss farmers' demands and the ongoing student agitation. The high-profile meeting, held in Delhi amid the CJP agitation at Jantar Mantar, has sparked intense political speculation in Maharashtra regarding potential realignments between political parties.

Pawar later tweeted that his visit to the Prime Minister was in connection with issues faced by farmers and the student protests, having visited the agitation site a day prior to the meeting. Following the high-level talks, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan submitted his resignation on Saturday, leading to the calling off of the student agitation.

Despite the resolution of the protests, the meeting has left leaders across Maharashtra attempting to figure out what was discussed behind closed doors. Top figures within the NCP (SP) have remained tight-lipped, with indications that even senior leaders within Pawar's own party were not informed about the specifics of the conversation.

Curiosity has also gripped leaders from the ruling Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra. A couple of Mahayuti leaders reportedly phoned a senior NCP (SP) leader to inquire about the details of the meeting. The senior leader informed them that he was unaware, stating that the only three people who knew what transpired were Prime Minister Modi, Supriya Sule, and Sharad Pawar himself.

The meeting has raised questions in political circles about whether the NCP (SP) might join the National Democratic Alliance directly, pursue a merger between its two factions, or offer issue-based support to the Union government, particularly on matters such as the upcoming delimitation bill. Any decision by Pawar could significantly alter the political landscape of Maharashtra.

The development has already impacted relations within opposition political alliances. Suspicious of Pawar’s recent moves, the Maharashtra Congress has begun avoiding collaboration with the NCP (SP). State Congress leaders chose not to invite Pawar's party to participate in their recent agitations regarding the NEET examination issue.
