Six Dead After Mankhurd Chawl Structure Collapses Due to Heavy Rain

Six people, including five children, died after a ground-plus-three-storey structure collapsed on Sunday around 8:30 PM at Chawl No. 5, Janta Nagar, behind Hanuman Mandir in Mankhurd, Mumbai. The collapse, which involved two to three hutments, occurred following continuous heavy rainfall that has battered the city.

Rescue teams rushed to the spot immediately after the collapse and pulled seven trapped individuals from the rubble. Five of the victims were taken to Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi, where they were declared dead on arrival. Two other victims were shifted to Rajawadi Hospital, where one person succumbed to their injuries during treatment. One injured victim survived the incident and remains in stable condition.

The deceased have been identified by officials as Aliya, aged 7; Muskan, aged 14; Nihal, aged 6; Nabiya, aged 2; Munaf, aged 7; and Soni, aged 32.

Following the tragedy, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep grief over the loss of lives and announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased. In a statement posted on X, the Chief Minister’s Office paid tribute to the victims, stating, "We share in the sorrow of the families who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate incident." The Chief Minister also assured all possible support from the state government.

Local leaders and officials visited the victims' families following the incident. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited Govandi’s Shatabdi Hospital late Sunday night to console the grieving relatives and review the rescue and medical situation. Maharashtra Samajwadi Party President Abu Azmi also visited the hospital to meet with the family members.

The Mankhurd collapse has pushed Mumbai’s monsoon-related death toll this season to 11. Previous rain-related incidents in the city, including tree falls and other structural collapses, had already claimed multiple lives.
