Six Dead Including Five Children in Mankhurd Slum Tenement Collapse

Six people, including five children and a 32-year-old woman, were killed after an unauthorized four-storey slum tenement collapsed onto an adjoining ground-floor shanty in Janta Nagar, Mankhurd, on Sunday night. The collapse, which occurred around 8:30 PM amid heavy rain, also left a passerby injured and plunged the local area into chaos.

The deceased victims have been identified as Nabiya, aged 2; Nihal, aged 6; Aliya, aged 7; Munaf, aged 7; Muskan, aged 14; and Soni, aged 32. According to local sources, four of the deceased belonged to the same family. The victims were pulled out of the debris after the crash and rushed to hospitals, where they were declared dead.

A 24-year-old passerby, identified as Rehan Ali, survived the incident with a fractured hand.

According to AIMIM corporator Vijay Ubale, who was present at the site, two dilapidated structures in the area that were on the verge of collapse had been vacated by residents on Sunday afternoon. However, several local residents returned to the area by evening, after which one of the structures collapsed. Ubale added that one of the deceased children was from a neighbouring house and had come over to play with the other children.

BJP corporator Navnath Ban confirmed the rescue efforts. Ubale noted that the sudden crash plunged the entire locality into chaos, making it difficult to initially determine whether more people remained trapped under the debris. Rescue operations were actively underway following the incident.

An on-duty medical officer at Shatabdi Hospital stated that a medical team from the facility was deputed to the site. Other hospital staff members were making further arrangements in case more casualties were brought in.

Mayor Ritu Tawade termed the house collapse an unfortunate incident. She noted that people continue to build such unauthorized constructions and live there, rebuilding repeatedly despite receiving vacancy notices from the civic body. Local authorities stated that the unauthorized four-storey tenement and the adjoining shanty were both built on the collector's land.
