Tension in Parel-Chinchpokli After Scuffle and Stone Pelting During Procession

Tension briefly prevailed in Mumbai's Parel-Chinchpokli area on Wednesday night, August 26, after a scuffle and stone pelting broke out between two groups during an Eid Milad-un-Nabi procession. Heavy police security was deployed to bring the situation under control, with senior officials confirming that the neighbourhood has returned to calm.

The incident took place near the Laxmi Cottage Building in Parel. Slogans were allegedly raised from both sides, triggering a verbal altercation that quickly escalated into physical clashes and stone pelting.

According to a local resident, an initial scuffle occurred around 7 pm, followed by heightened tension around 9 pm near Laxmi Cottage, where banners were allegedly torn. Several individuals sustained injuries during the confrontation and were taken to KEM Hospital in Parel for medical treatment. Some people were also detained or arrested following the clashes.

Videos circulating on social media showed a large roadblock formed by crowds after the altercation, as well as police personnel chasing individuals and using force to disperse the mob.

Following the unrest, the Mumbai Police deployed additional forces across Parel, Chinchpokli, and nearby neighbourhoods. Authorities blocked access roads leading towards the area from multiple sides to prevent further escalation. The Byculla-to-Lalbaug-Parel bridge was also temporarily closed to vehicular traffic, with vehicles diverted through alternate routes.

Mumbai Police Joint Commissioner (Law and Order) Dr Manoj Sharma confirmed that senior officers were on-site to oversee the security response. Sharma stated that the situation was completely calm and appealed to citizens not to believe or spread rumours.

By Thursday morning, normal activity had resumed around Laxmi Cottage in the Parel-Chinchpokli belt. Traffic moved without disruption and local shops opened as usual, while police personnel remained stationed in the area to monitor the situation and maintain law and order.
