Two Thane Youths Killed in Hit-and-Run Near Mahape MIDC

Two youths from Thane were killed in a hit-and-run incident after an unidentified speeding vehicle struck their motorcycle in the Mahape MIDC area on August 25 at around 10 pm.

The deceased have been identified as 27-year-old Sachin Mahadev Gaikwad and 23-year-old Rohit Vilas Babar, both residents of Thane. The fatal collision took place at a road junction near the Nelco company situated in the electronic zone of the Mahape MIDC industrial belt.

According to police officials, both victims were traveling together on the motorcycle to report for their night shift at a company located in the electronic zone. As per their regular daily routine, they had left from Thane at around 9 pm. Sachin Gaikwad was riding the two-wheeler while Rohit Babar was riding pillion when the unidentified vehicle crashed into them.

Following the collision, the motorcycle got caught under the wheels of the speeding vehicle. The driver continued driving, dragging both youths along the road for approximately 15 to 20 metres. The impact and dragging caused grievous injuries to both Gaikwad and Babar, leading to their deaths.

PSI Rajendra Chitte of the Turbhe police stated that an official complaint was lodged following the incident by Suraj Gaikwad, aged 32, who is the cousin of the deceased Sachin Gaikwad.

Based on the complaint, the Turbhe police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the unidentified driver. The case has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including offences of causing death of other persons by a rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide, rash driving on a public way, and acts endangering the life or personal safety of others.

Additionally, the police have invoked provisions under the Motor Vehicle Act, specifically relating to driving dangerously and failing to perform the mandatory duty of a driver in the event of an accident and injury to a person.
