Wadala Footbridge Squalor Highlights BMC Maintenance Neglect in F North Ward

Severe squalor, maintenance lapses, and rampant unauthorised hawking were uncovered during a spot check on Tuesday at the footbridge connecting Wadala Road railway station to Wadala East. The pedestrian connector falls under the jurisdiction of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's F North ward.

The condition of the bridge has raised serious concerns among daily commuters and local residents regarding the civic body's oversight. While the BMC promotes a pedestrian-first policy across Mumbai, citizens have pointed out that civic footbridges continue to suffer from neglect and poor upkeep, demanding that the pedestrian-first mandate be actively extended to these vital elevated walkways.

During the spot check, unauthorised hawking activities were observed taking place in broad daylight directly on the Wadala East footbridge, occupying vital pedestrian space and compounding the neglected state of the walkway. The entire structure was found in a state of severe disrepair and squalor.

Following an inquiry call placed to F North ward maintenance officials during the inspection, a team of BMC cleaning staff was dispatched to the site. Although the sanitation workers arrived promptly to address the conditions, the sheer scale of the accumulated dirt and squalor on the bridge limited the immediate impact of their cleaning efforts.

The state of the Wadala connector continues to underscore the gap between the civic administration's pedestrian-centric commitments and the ground reality of pedestrian infrastructure maintenance in the area.
