Woman Arrested for Rs 6.3 Lakh Jewellery Theft at Oberoi Hotel in Nariman Point
A 49-year-old woman from Gujarat has been arrested for allegedly stealing jewellery worth Rs 6.3 lakh from a store inside the Oberoi Hotel at Nariman Point, Mumbai. The suspect, identified by police as Priti Dasani, reportedly posed as a customer and tried on multiple ornaments before making off with the valuables.
The incident took place on September 2 at Vipul Arts Shop, located inside the luxury hotel premises. According to the police, a 31-year-old employee of the boutique was attending to visitors when Dasani walked in around 1:00 PM claiming she wanted to make a purchase.
Investigators stated that Dasani was well-dressed and spent a considerable amount of time examining different items. She tried on several gold ornaments, including rings, earrings, bracelets, and bangles, before leaving the outlet without buying anything.
After she left, the shop employee conducted a routine check and counted the jewellery in the display trays. The employee soon discovered that a pair of gold earrings worth Rs 2 lakh, an additional single earring, and a ring were missing, amounting to a total loss of Rs 6.3 lakh.
The employee reviewed the store's CCTV footage, which captured the theft and led to the identification of the suspect. A complaint was then lodged with the local police.
Police subsequently tracked down and arrested Dasani, who is a resident of Porbandar district in Gujarat. Following her arrest, she was produced before a magistrate and remanded in police custody as part of the ongoing investigation.
