Yunus Hakimuddin Sheikh, 63, Killed by Falling Tree in Kurla Amid Heavy Mumbai Rains

A 63-year-old man was killed today after a tree collapsed on him in Mumbai's Kurla neighbourhood, marking the third such fatality in the city in recent times. The tragic incident occurred amid heavy monsoon rains, sparking safety concerns among commuters who use the busy Kurla-Andheri road.
The victim, identified as Yunus Hakimuddin Sheikh, had recently purchased a shop in the Kurla area. Sheikh had arrived at the location today to prepare for the shop's upcoming opening day when the tree fell with great force, striking him. The entire incident was captured on a nearby CCTV camera.
The CCTV footage showed Sheikh standing near his new shop moments before the tree crashed down. The collapse also caused damage to multiple vehicles parked below. Following the accident, local residents alleged that no officials from the municipal corporation arrived at the scene for at least two hours after the tree fell.
This incident is the latest in a series of tree-collapse tragedies in the city. Days ago, 11-year-old Vihaan Srivastava was killed and four other children were injured when a tree collapsed on their school bus. That tree, estimated to be 60 to 70 years old, had been inspected in May and declared healthy before undergoing routine trimming.
The repeated accidents have raised serious concerns about urban tree health in Mumbai, where haphazard construction and concrete slabs blocking roots often weaken trees. Details regarding the maintenance history of the tree that fell today in Kurla are still awaited from the municipal corporation.
The collapse occurred during a period of intense rain-related disruptions across Mumbai. The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert today after some areas of the city recorded 250 to 300 mm of rainfall over a 23-hour period.
