7 Dead, 7 Injured After Landslide Strikes Ashok Nagar in Ghatkopar
Seven people were killed and seven others injured when a massive landslide struck Ashok Nagar in Ghatkopar at around 3:48 am on Wednesday. Debris, boulders, and an uprooted peepal tree crashed down the hillside onto homes below following continuous rainfall over two days, which officials suspect weakened the rock and root systems on the slope.
The deceased include four members of a single family who had arrived in Mumbai from Uttar Pradesh four days prior: Arif Halim Shaikh (28), his wife Marjina Arif Shaikh (27), and their two children Aban Arif Shaikh (2) and Mannat Arif Shaikh (4). The other deceased were identified as Viket alias Rahul Yadav, Sahil Husain Abdul Kadri (19), and Mohammed Sayeed Ansari (14).
The seven injured residents—Sohail Ansari (18), Mohamad Ansari (14), Naimuddhin Iqbal Khan (28), Sajid Ansari (16), Farana Dilber Khan (28), Dilber Amnulla Khan (38), and Shamin Muslim Khan (26)—were shifted to nearby government hospitals. Deceased bodies recovered from the rubble by 2 pm were sent to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar and civic-run Bhabha Hospital in Kurla for postmortem procedures.
Around 70 to 75 emergency personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Mumbai Fire Brigade, local police, and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) participated in the search and rescue operation. Rescuers faced severe operational challenges due to darkness and extremely narrow, congested lanes that prevented rescue machinery from accessing the site. Emergency personnel had to form human chains to clear debris and navigate passages where only one person could pass at a time.
Following the collapse, police and civic officials evacuated approximately 50 vulnerable houses in the vicinity. DCP Ganesh Shinde (Zone 7) confirmed that affected families were shifted to BMC-arranged accommodations or relatives' homes. Ghatkopar police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) in connection with the tragedy.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site and announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased victim, as well as Rs 50,000 in medical aid for each injured resident to support treatment costs.
