Colaba Theft Case: Actress Rupa Dutta Granted Bail on Rs 50,000 Bond

A Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Mumbai has granted bail to Bengali actress Rupa Umashankar Dutta following her arrest in connection with a Rs 1.48 lakh theft case in Colaba.
The court granted her bail on a personal bond of Rs 50,000 and instructed her not to tamper with evidence or leave the country without prior permission, according to her advocate Sunil Pandey.
The case was registered following a complaint by Dimple Singhvi, a resident of Marine Drive. According to the complaint, Singhvi's purse was stolen on July 12, 2026, while she was travelling through crowded areas between Babulnath Temple and Colaba.
The stolen purse contained a diamond-studded gold bracelet valued at approximately Rs 1.20 lakh, Rs 10,000 in cash, Apple AirPods worth around Rs 15,000, along with a wallet and other personal documents.
Following the complaint, the Colaba Police launched an investigation into the incident. During the inquiry, investigators obtained CCTV footage that allegedly captured Dutta following the complainant. Based on this evidence, police subsequently arrested her. Officials also claimed to have recovered a portion of the stolen items from her possession.
During court proceedings, advocate Sunil Pandey argued that Dutta had been falsely implicated in the theft and was a victim of circumstances. The magistrate court granted her bail after hearing arguments from the defence.
Dutta has acted in several Hindi and Bengali productions, including the 2005 film Saathi and the television serial Jai Maa Vaishno Devi. She was previously arrested in 2022 over allegations of pickpocketing at the Kolkata Book Fair.
