Fire Breaks Out at Aaykar Bhavan in Churchgate, Rescue Operations Underway

A fire broke out in the basement of Aaykar Bhavan, the Income Tax Office located on Maharshi Karve Road in Churchgate, on Monday afternoon. The Mumbai Fire Brigade launched an immediate emergency response to tackle the blaze and carry out evacuation operations for employees stranded on the upper floors of the building. Officials confirmed that no injuries have been reported so far.
According to information provided by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Disaster Management Cell, the fire was initially reported at around 2 pm. The incident occurred in the basement of the commercial building, which is a basement-plus-ground-plus-seven-storey structure. Fire officials stated that the blaze remained confined to the basement area of the premises.
To manage the situation, Mumbai Fire Brigade teams split their efforts between active firefighting and search-and-rescue tasks. While one team worked to extinguish the flames in the basement, another team focused on safely evacuating individuals trapped on the floors above. Fire personnel deployed ladders to reach the upper-floor windows, helping stranded occupants exit the building safely.
A significant deployment of senior fire officials and firefighting personnel was sent to the spot in Churchgate. Multiple fire engines and specialised emergency vehicles were stationed along Maharshi Karve Road to support both the firefighting operations and the evacuation process.
The exact cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained. Authorities stated that further details regarding the incident and the full assessment of the building remain awaited as operations continue.
