IMD Issues Orange Alert for Mumbai as BMC Warns Coastal Areas of High Tides

On Tuesday, June 30, 2026, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) officially issued a yellow weather alert for Mumbai and its surrounding areas. In addition to the warning for Tuesday, the weather forecasting agency has predicted heavy rainfall to continue into the following day, issuing an orange alert for Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

In response to the IMD's weather forecasts, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has reached out to local citizens with safety guidance. The BMC has specifically advised residents who live in low-lying coastal areas of Mumbai to remain on high alert. This precautionary warning is linked to the combined threat of the heavy rainfall and high tides predicted for the coastal zones.

These weather alerts follow a period of steady precipitation in the region. According to official data, Mumbai recorded more than 26 mm of rain in the 24 hours leading up to Tuesday morning. The 26 mm of rain recorded in the previous 24 hours marks a significant start to the wet weather forecast for the final day of June and the first day of July.

In its Tuesday weather bulletin, the IMD stated that Mumbai is likely to experience cloudy conditions accompanied by heavy rain. Along with the precipitation forecasts, the meteorological department released temperature data for the city. The maximum temperature recorded in Mumbai was 29.9 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 24.9 degrees Celsius.

The progression from a yellow alert on Tuesday to an orange alert on Wednesday points to an expectation of heavier rainfall as the week begins. Municipal authorities and the IMD continue to advise residents, particularly those in the vulnerable low-lying coastal areas of Mumbai and its surrounding areas, to monitor the weather and remain alert to the high tides.
