IMD Issues Red Alert For Thane And Mumbai As Heavy Rains Cause Widespread Disruption

On Sunday morning, July 5, 2026, heavy monsoon rainfall continued to lash Thane, Mumbai, and Pune, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to place Thane and Mumbai under a red alert. The severe weather has caused widespread traffic disruptions, waterlogging in key transit areas, and the deployment of emergency rescue teams to manage safety risks.

The IMD issued the red alert notification at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, 2026, warning that there is no immediate relief from the heavy downpour. Additionally, the Konkan region and Pune district’s ghat areas were placed under an orange alert, with authorities warning of a risk of minor landslides.

State Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan urged citizens to avoid stepping out of their homes unless there is urgent work. Mahajan confirmed that more than 200 mm of rain fell within a 12-hour period, describing it as very heavy rainfall.

To assist the affected public and clear blocked roads, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed. Emergency personnel have been stationed near manholes to prevent accidents, and active efforts are underway to clear traffic.

The intense rainfall has already caused significant infrastructure issues. On July 4, the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) railway station in Kurla experienced severe waterlogging. Widespread civic chaos, traffic disruptions, and multiple incidents of accidents and injuries have been reported across the region.

Authorities have also raised concerns over public safety at tourist spots. Minister Mahajan appealed to tourists and sightseers to avoid high-tide areas, noting that many accidents occur due to people taking selfies in dangerous locations. Similarly, in the Worli area, citizens loitering along the seafront were urged to leave by local officials who observed people sitting on parapets despite warnings from the corporation and police.

The current weather follows an earlier spell of heavy rain and strong winds that caused multiple trees to fall, blocking key roads. In one tragic incident in Chembur, an 11-year-old student died and several others were injured when a tree fell on a school bus.
