MSEDCL Hikes Power Tariffs by 20 to 55 Paise per Unit in Thane and MMR

Electricity consumers in Thane, Mulund, Navi Mumbai, and Kalyan-Dombivli across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and the rest of Maharashtra are facing higher power bills after the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited raised its tariffs. The state-owned distribution utility introduced an increase ranging between 20 paise and 55 paise per unit in the form of a fuel adjustment charge.
The state-owned power distribution company implemented the tariff hike after power purchase costs exceeded initial estimates. The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission permits power distribution utilities to retrospectively recover the additional costs incurred during power procurement by levying a fuel adjustment charge on consumers.
The revised tariff structure will have a direct impact on domestic households based on their monthly consumption levels. Under the new rates, residential consumers who consume 300 units of electricity in a month will see their monthly electricity bills rise by ₹105. For households consuming 500 units of power per month, the total bill will increase by ₹250.
Commercial and industrial consumers across the region will also see higher electricity costs under the revised rates. Small industrial units will pay an additional 25 paise to 35 paise per unit. Because of the substantial volume of power required by these manufacturing and processing setups, monthly electricity expenses for small industries are projected to increase by a few thousand rupees each.
Commercial consumers, which include retail shops, shopping malls, and various other business establishments, will face an increase of 35 paise to 60 paise per unit, depending on their specific electricity usage categories and load.
Officials from MSEDCL stated that the utility spent more money than previously estimated on power procurement due to several operational factors, including an increase in the prevailing market rates of electricity. The distribution company is using the fuel adjustment charge mechanism to recover these incurred expenses. According to an official from the power utility, the company is charging an average increase of 30 paise per unit across consumer categories.
