Mumbai Port Authority Deploys Three New Fire Tenders at Victoria Docks

The Mumbai Port Authority commissioned three newly deployed fire tenders, along with dedicated manpower and a heavy-duty dewatering pump, at the Fire Memorial in Victoria Docks on 19 August at 10.00 a.m.

The commissioning was led by Dr. Madhaiyaan Angamuthu, IAS, Chairperson of the Mumbai Port Authority. The event was attended by Shri Adesh Titarmare, IAS, Deputy Chairperson of the Mumbai Port Authority, alongside heads of departments and senior officials from the organization.

The newly inducted fire tenders have been assigned to the Port Fire Service to bolster emergency response capabilities across the port estate. Mumbai Port regularly manages high-risk cargo and installations, including petroleum products, chemicals, cargo vessels, storage warehouses, oil jetties, and marine infrastructure, making rapid firefighting response a critical operational requirement.

According to port authorities, the newly commissioned vehicles are equipped with high-pressure monitors capable of long-range water throw. This design allows firefighting personnel to combat blazes from a safer operational distance during extreme heat and dense smoke conditions.

The vehicles are fitted with specialized multi-pressure fire pumps. In standard operations, the normal pressure range operates between 2,850 and 3,000 litres per minute (LPM) at 7 to 10 bar. For high-pressure operations, the system delivers 250 to 400 LPM at 30 to 35 bar. Additionally, the tenders feature large-capacity water and foam storage tanks, ensuring prolonged firefighting operations during emergencies at berths, vessels, storage facilities, and other port sites without requiring immediate replenishment.

Alongside the tenders, the authority also introduced a trailer-mounted, diesel-driven, auto-priming dewatering pump. The 52 HP unit provides a discharge capacity of 550 cubic metres per hour, featuring 8-inch suction and discharge openings, a minimum head of 40 metres, and the ability to draw water from depths of up to 9 metres.

The deployment of these specialized vehicles and the dewatering unit is intended to strengthen the Port Fire Service's readiness for fires and other emergencies across Mumbai Port premises.
