Western Railway Widens Prabhadevi Station Entry to Ease Passenger Congestion

Western Railway has begun work to widen the narrow entry and exit point on the western side of the South Foot Over Bridge at Prabhadevi railway station to reduce severe passenger congestion.
An existing toilet block next to the foot overbridge (FOB) was demolished after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation issued a no-objection certificate, clearing the area for the construction of a new staircase. Excavation for the staircase foundation is currently underway alongside trial pits dug to identify underground utilities such as water pipelines and electrical cables.
Steel components for the new staircase structure are being fabricated on priority at the Dadar Workshop. To compensate for the demolished toilet facility, Western Railway agreed to provide two toilets from an existing railway colony block for local residents, while the BMC has been requested to make supplementary arrangements.
The decision to restructure the access points followed joint inspections conducted by Mumbai Central Divisional Railway Manager Pankaj Singh, along with railway and municipal officials. Passenger circulation challenges at Prabhadevi West were further addressed during a joint coordination meeting on August 18 involving railway, BMC, MahaRail, police, and traffic authorities.
Pedestrian flow and crowding on the existing FOB increased significantly following the dismantling of the Carol Road Over Bridge. In response, the BMC has agreed in principle to review a proposal for an additional 12-metre-wide FOB equipped with staircase and lift facilities. Western Railway and civic authorities will jointly determine the location for the proposed bridge based on site constraints and land availability.
