Governor Jishnu Dev Varma Urges Stronger Maharashtra-Hessen Economic Partnerships

MUMBAI — Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma called for stronger economic, technological, and innovation partnerships between Maharashtra and the German state of Hessen on Thursday, speaking at the Maharashtra-Hessen Economic & Technology Dialogue held at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in Mumbai.

Addressing delegates at the event, Varma stated that establishing a stronger connection between Mumbai and Frankfurt, alongside broader cooperation between Maharashtra and Hessen, could unlock substantial new opportunities for industry, investment, scientific research, and global trade.

The economic dialogue was organised by PartexAI at the NSE premises in Mumbai. Boris Rhein, the Minister President of the German state of Hessen, was present among the key delegates attending the session.

Drawing parallels between the two economic hubs, Varma observed that Frankfurt represents the financial heart of Germany and serves as one of the leading financial centres across Europe. In turn, he characterised Mumbai as the financial capital of India, serving as the home base for the country's premier banks, capital markets, major corporate headquarters, and the broader investment community.

Varma described Maharashtra as India's largest state economy and presented key indicators to illustrate its industrial strength. According to the Governor, Maharashtra contributes approximately 13.5 percent of India's national income, 15.5 percent of the country's total industrial output, and around 15 percent of its overall exports.

Focusing on international investment inflows, Varma informed the visiting German delegation that Maharashtra attracted roughly 31 percent of all foreign direct investment entering India between the years 2000 and 2025.

Emphasising the state's potential as a destination for international enterprise, Varma stated that Maharashtra offers a vast market, a diversified industrial base, robust capital, advanced technology, skilled talent, established research institutions, strong infrastructure, and extensive global connectivity.
