Kalwa Police and Rationing Dept Seize 11,000 Litres of Illegal Petrol Worth ₹20 Lakh

In a joint operation against the illicit fuel trade, officials from the Mumbai-Thane Rationing Department alongside the Kalwa Police intercepted a tanker carrying approximately 11,000 litres of contraband petrol in Kalwa, Thane. The total value of the seized property, comprising the transport vehicle and the fuel consignment, has been estimated at around ₹20 lakh.
The enforcement action was executed under the guidance of Chandrakant Dange, Controller of the Mumbai-Thane Rationing Department. A specialized team led by Deputy Controller Bhaskar Tayde carried out the raid in the Kalwa area, where they intercepted the commercial tanker bearing registration number MH 14 M 8808.
When officers stopped the vehicle and requested the mandatory transport permits and valid legal documentation for the fuel consignment, the driver failed to produce any required paperwork or official invoices.
Treating the shipment as an illegal consignment, the authorities immediately impounded the tanker. Officials then registered a formal case at the Kalwa Police Station against both the driver of the vehicle and the registered vehicle owner.
"The consignment was intercepted after the driver failed to present any valid documentation or invoices for transporting such a large volume of petrol. Given the high risk and suspicious movement, we have impounded the tanker and initiated legal proceedings. A detailed probe is currently underway to uncover the source of this fuel and identify the intended recipient of the illegal consignment," stated Bhaskar Tayde, Deputy Controller of the Thane Regional Office.
Authorities suspect that the seized consignment may be part of a broader illicit fuel network operating in and around the region. A detailed investigation remains underway to determine the exact location where the petrol was loaded and to identify the intended distribution points and recipients.
