Thane FDA and NDPS Seize Banned Gutkha Worth Lakhs at Mumbra Bypass

A joint team from the Thane Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Narcotics Control Division (NDPS) intercepted a vehicle near the Mumbra Bypass traffic beat in Thane, seizing a large consignment of banned gutkha and tobacco products.
Acting on a tip-off, enforcement authorities stopped an Ertiga car along the route and arrested the driver on the spot. While officials confirmed that the seized contraband carries an estimated value in the lakhs of rupees, specific details regarding the exact valuation and the seized brand names remained undisclosed as legal proceedings were underway.
An investigating official confirmed that formal documentation and legal steps were being executed following the operation. The official stated that the process of registering an FIR was currently underway, and that detailed information regarding the total quantity, estimated market value, specific product brands, and potential accomplices would be released once legal formalities were concluded.
The manufacturing, storage, distribution, and sale of gutkha and scented tobacco are under a strict state-wide ban across Maharashtra. Despite the prohibition, illegal transit networks continue to operate and transport banned substances through transit corridors.
Authorities stated that the interception at the Mumbra Bypass is viewed as a crucial step in dismantling local smuggling corridors. Further investigation is expected to establish the origin of the contraband and identify the intended destination of the seized consignment.
